I have a copy of the New England Primer. It has more theological truth in it than a lot of books you'll find in a Christian book store today. It was a central textbook in our school system for many, many decades after the American Revolution. But now that we've gotten rid of it, we can have sex in the back of the classroom and school shootings. We really traded up, didn't we?

This is another area where South Dakota continues in the wrong direction. A few years ago the Legislature passed a change in the mandatory attendance age in our state, from 16 to 18. It cost the state about $4,000,000 per year, placed unmotivated and hostile teens in the classroom to disturb serious students and disrupt the classroom. This added another challenge to teachers who are already pushed to the limit as they try to deliver an education to their students. I opposed the bill. It passed. The following year I brought a bill to repeal the new requirement. It failed in our Republican controlled Legislature.
I think Kristi Noem brought a repeal bill the following year... it didn't survive either.

Don't forget to read the comments for the Wiant article. This one recounts another experience with liberal orthodoxy that indoctrinated teachers might not even see as such:

Like the words "liberal" and "progressive", the meaning of "fairness" is being twisted and corrupted by the left, and the indoctrination starts early when our kids are very young. I remember one library book I read to my daughter when she was around 5, I think it was called the "Rainbow Fish", about a fish that was covered with beautiful, colorful, iridescent scales, but all of its compatriot fish were just a dull gray. The Rainbow Fish was made to feel sad that its beauty made all the other fish feel bad. In the end, the Rainbow Fish was convinced that it was only fair to give each of the other fish one of its beautiful scales, so that everyone could be happy. I was so angry when I realized the point of this whole story, and that it was nothing but collectivist propaganda.

Hi Gordon, My husband just made a beautiful bench seat for our family table, the kids can slide in easier, and get out easier, We have our 6:12:6 routine here with 6:00 breakfast/noon Lunch/6 supper....with all 4 boys, mom and dad at the table..and homeschooling taboot. You are right it is doable if we choose our children over materialism.

Brad, as usual, you are spot on. Family gathering every day around the dinner table seems to be gone from the American scene.

Good Luck with this idea! Data Privacy laws & Union intervention will likely prevent any personal evaluation of teachers (especially negative) from ever reaching parents. I served on a school board, and such items were never to be discussed even at your family coffee table, let alone in a public setting! The revenge of the NEA is an extremely powerful weapon! No wonder so many educators kowtow to their giant protector!
